hello, LOVED your postcast. I have a question though, why do you think some people are hating on Serena rn? I don't get this. Maybe the writers don't see DB like the bad guys at all? If they are in "lurve", the audience should be rooting for them (even if Dan sent that video and isolated Blair from her friends)? I just have no idea what the writers are trying to say. Everything is so all over the place, it's like they are playing on different fields at the same time. :((
YES! I get to write a post about Serena!
Okay, here goes… I don’t think the writing is meant to villainize Serena at all. She has tried to be there for Blair as much as she could this season, and it is Blair who made the choice not to confide in her and talk to Dan instead. And it is Serena who recognizes that this is a Blair who is lying to everyone and to herself - she is not the Blair that her BFF knows and loves.
Now, as for why audience members are still against Serena when she has grown and matured so much over the last year is - I think - because many of us are still in the mindset that Serena takes everything from Blair. We have not yet adjusted to the fact that Serena and Blair have switched roles this season: Serena is the career-driven girl who is getting slighted by her love, and Blair is the guy-obsessed one who doesn’t realize how her actions are affecting the most important people in her life.
Credit goes to gellergreen on the gossipgirlsss forum for noticing this, but the season 4 finale had a scene with Serena and Blair exchanging accessories:
Here we see that one of them will literally be walking in the other one’s shoes. And the other girl will be in her best friend’s “head.” We don’t yet know what the in-show reason is for Blair to be acting the way she is, but I think the scene above (as well as several references throughout the season to the Jason Bateman movie The Change-Up) is a hint that the change is real. We can feel sorry for Serena and see that she is trying her hardest to reach Blair, but Blair is momentarily lost to her.
Sort of like how Blair tried to reach out to Serena pre-pilot, but the poor girl was mentally - and then physically - gone. Yes/yes?
